How do I use the color balls in my training session today?

Wie setze ich die Colorballs noch heute auf dem Platz ein?

For all coaches eager to start right aways using the Colorballs on the field, here's the ultimate gameplan.

  1. Mix the Colorballs with your regular training balls.

  2. Choose one of your favorite drills.

  3. Think of meaningful rules/information that provoke your main goal of the drill

  4. Assign a rule/information to each ball color.

  5. Explain the drill and the rules/information associated with the Colorballs.

  6. Start the drill.

  7. Control the difficulty level of the drill by playing the balls into the drill

Neutral balls (your regular training balls) are perfect for playing the drill in the familiar way your players are used to (= a safe, predictable environment for the brain). If you notice that the flow of play isn’t quite there yet, occasionally play in a neutral ball to restore safety and confidence in your players.

Every time a Colorball is introduced, the entire game changes. This demands a lot of focus, communication, and even quicker decision-making from your players. The best part: the surprise element of the Colorball always brings a lot of fun to the session.

Here are the top 3 Colorball rules/information we frequently use in drills on the field:

Contact Rule

  • Red Ball = 1 touch
  • Blue Ball = 2 touches
  • Yellow Ball = maximum 2 touches
  • Green Ball = alternating 1 and 2 touches
  • Neutral Ball = free play

Pass Rule (X passes = 1 goal)

  • Blue Ball = 4 passes
  • Green Ball = 6 passes
  • Yellow Ball = 8 passes
  • Red Ball = 10 passes
  • White Ball = 12 passes

Wide Players (Wall Players) Rule

  • Blue Ball = 4 outside players
  • Red Ball = 4 inside players
  • Yellow Ball = 2 outside, 2 inside
  • Green Ball = 3 outside, 1 inside
  • White Ball = 1 inside, 3 outside

Have fun using these on the pitch!
